Every minute a container full of oil-based plastics is dumped in our oceans. The lifespan of this plastic ranges from 450 - 1000 years. Furthermore, this plastic will gradually start to break down into microplastics that can do damage to animals, humans and entire ecosystems. They have found microplastics in newborn sharks and newborn babies.
This makes the plastic pollution one of the most pressing issues of our time - something we are all responsible for, and something we can all be a part of solving. We need to change the way we treat plastic and make sure to make plastic pollution history. Luckily both legislation and customer awareness are pushing the development forward.
Introducing the Potato Plastic material!
Potato Plastic is a biodegradable and home compostable material made from potato waste and water that can be used for single-use items such as cutlery, straws, and film. Single-use items are used approximately 20 minutes, and whilst traditional plastic is made to last more than 450 years before it starts to break down into microplastics, Potato Plastic will dissolve within 2 months, into unharmful nutrients.
The goal is to encourage to minimize the usage of single-use items and provide a better alternative for when they are absolutely necessary.

Dear ideagivers, the basic concept of this idea is great; being part of solving one of the biggest problems when it some to our environment and sustainable future- non-biodegradable plastic pollution. And it seems perfectly natural for a Swedish team to use potatoes as bioplastic. But then again, as you say there are many producers of all kinds of bioplatsics, that have been developing for decades. So how come they didn´t see this low-hanging fruit? As being a little bit of a material nerd myself, and having worked with bioplatsics from jute, I wouls LOVE to touch and feel your dummies, the film and the other samples you developed so far. Can the potato-plastics stand on its own, or does it need some blending of other "recyclebles"? Your presentation takes a very large grip, but I miss the details- how did you test it and how and what was the results so far? You seem to be a good team, but you lack the "potatoe-guy" :-), a person who knows about crop and where to gather all the peels, if there is going to be a volume production. Also, see if there is any more application areas you can imagine....I think the idea is good, but you should gain from being more "real", and detailed. And, why not try go do a co-branding, co-RnD with Sibylla or Max burgers? Eating mashed potatoes or fries with the potatoplastic fork. Good luck!
Let's save the world from plastic one potato at the time! Keep up the great work Potato Plastic!
I've had the pleasure to try out some of Potato Plastic's prototypes and to meet their team quite often. All I can say is that both are great! Best of luck!
