Teal School Hubs

Due to the pandemic, people and the school systems around the world are disrupted on many levels. Our small Teal School learning hubs provide social, emotional and academic learning for kids, alleviating loneliness, mental health issues, domestic strain and anxiety and at the same time reducing pressure on teachers and parents.

In response to multiple problems that arise or are accentuated in the ongoing crisis we at Teal School have developed the concept, Teal School Hubs.

Teal School hubs are small, local units that provide children with social emotional support, guidance and facilitate learning. Alleviating loneliness, mental health issues, domestic strain and anxiety and at the same time supporting key workers who need care for their children when at work.

Some of the problems we meet:

• Keeping up with schoolwork: Many children have no habit of taking full responsibility for their learning journey. This is because self-leadership is not taught in traditional schools.
• Loneliness: children who do not usually socialize online or with few or no friends lose out, at worst, all social interaction.
• Vulnerability: Children in dysfunctional families, who in “normal” times get a break from the situation when at school, lose the opportunity with quarantine and similar situations.
• Grief, worry, stress: We see the possibility, as fellow human beings, to support the children's emotional needs and to also assess and intervene when a child is showing signs that further help is needed.
• Mental health: For some children the social interaction they get at school is their lifejacket.

Teal School Hubs are small units that can be implemented quickly and flexibly in various types of crisis situations to give children access to support and progress socially, emotionally and in their learning journey.

We want to start a first hub in Stockholm. We also want to start developing a digital tool that can be used for the administration of hubs, learning guides, parents and children. We want the tool to be able to function as onboarding and support for learning guides as well as a communication channel. We have several more ideas for how the digital tool can support everyone involved.

We see that the concept could be useful in other situations such as natural disasters, in refugee camps as well as support for school dropouts.

Teal School works in several ways to influence the transformation of the school system and we see the potential of the Teal School Hubs to also be a force in meeting the shifting needs of the labour market now and onward. Abilities and competencies that the labour market is increasingly in demand for, such as problem solving, entrepreneurial thinking and empathy. Along with being able to collaborate and co-create, communicate and be flexible, see contexts and have the courage to move forward in an uncertain world, are qualities that are needed.
