Ambidex - Balancing the electrical grid using food retail refrigeration as a flexible power consumer

10

Ambidex is an energy flexibility start-up looking to utilise the refrigeration systems of grocery food retail in Sweden and the rest of Europe to help balance the electrical grid.

With an increasing share of electrical output from renewable sources comes variability in power output. This means that the balance between supply of power and demand for power becomes harder to maintain. Grid operators are therefore offering services where consumers in society can reduce their consumption for short periods a few times a year to help them deal with a shortage of power production.

Ambidex can adapt the consumption of the refrigeration systems of grocery food retail to the needs of the electrical grid and can thus help increase the flexibility of the electrical system which is a critical component in the sustainable energy transition. Increasing the flexibility of the electrical system means that the system becomes better equipped to handle the variations in electrical output which in turn means that more renewable energy can be implemented. Ambidex can therefore help accelerate the sustainable energy transition.
